This academic year, the University of North Georgia has implemented an innovative first-year program on one campus during which fifteen students take eight core courses, four each semester, as a cohort, along with a non-credit leadership course. The keystone of the program is a service learning project requirement. The cohort has partnered with its local Family Connection organization to address issues related to drug and alcohol abuse in the region. This presentation will explore the integration of the drug and alcohol abuse focus across the courses, connecting disciplines students might otherwise see as unrelated (Math, English, Political Science, Psychology, and Philosophy), the process of forming a community partner, and the implementation of the service learning component. The presentation will also include a discussion of faculty experiences and student feedback to date.
